Mentor Match Initiative
Our Mentor Match Initiative connects young people with seasoned professionals in the careers they dream of pursuing—whether that’s graphic design, engineering, culinary arts, or entrepreneurship. Applicants submit a simple form highlighting their interests and goals, and through our tiered mentor-matching system, we carefully pair each participant with a thoroughly vetted mentor. These mentors provide personalized guidance, goal-setting support, and real-world insight that empowers youth to turn aspirations into action.
Quality mentoring has never been more essential. In 2023, one in three young people in the U.S. reported growing up without a mentor of any kind—a gap that leaves many without the encouragement and direction they need to discover their strengths and passions. Backed by data and national statistics, our program directly addresses this need, ensuring that every child receives the tools and support necessary to envision—and achieve—their future.
We gather and analyze feedback from youth, parents or guardians, and mentors to continuously refine and perfect every aspect of the program. This data-driven approach ensures that each mentorship experience is not only meaningful in the moment but also a lasting, transformative influence. Every match is designed to be a lifelong memory—one that sparks confidence, builds skills, and helps shape the child’s path toward success.
Inspire & Learn Workshops
Our free, hands-on workshops bring engaging, career-focused learning directly into underserved neighborhoods—led by experienced professionals who share their expertise and real-world insight. Whether it’s an engineer guiding students through an introductory “STEM Discovery Lab” where they code robots and build simple circuits, or a graphic designer leading a “Creative Arts” session on digital design and storytelling, each workshop uses an interactive learning style that keeps participants actively engaged while blending practical instruction with inspiring mentorship.
To ensure an optimal experience, students are required to register in advance, allowing us to tailor sessions to the group’s interests and skill levels. Before and after each workshop, participants complete short surveys so we can track effectiveness, measure skill growth, and gather valuable feedback. This data-driven approach not only helps us continuously improve our programming, but also allows us to follow up on success stories—celebrating when participants go on to further explore, study, or even work in the fields they first discovered with us.
By connecting youth with industry experts, these sessions do more than teach skills—they show what’s possible, ignite passion, and make career paths feel tangible. Backed by data, the urgency is clear: by 2025, an estimated 3.5 million STEM jobs in the U.S. are projected to go unfilled without expanded access to early STEM education (iD Tech). Our workshops help close this gap, ensuring that every child—regardless of zip code—has the opportunity to explore fields, unlock potential, and chart a path toward future success.
Northstar Community Events
We bring neighbors together for a cause through vibrant, inclusive gatherings that celebrate culture, connection, and generosity—while directly supporting our mission to uplift underserved communities. From lively summer block parties with live bands and local food trucks, to festive holiday markets filled with artisan vendors, interactive raffles, and kid-friendly activity zones, each event is designed to spark joy and foster unity.
Our community events aren’t just celebrations—they’re powerful catalysts for change. Through Northstar’s gatherings, we not only bring people together but also provide tangible support for our students’ success. From distributing backpacks, books, and essential school supplies to offering educational resources that open doors to new opportunities, these events are designed to strengthen both hearts and minds. Every performance, every shared meal, and every raffle ticket purchased helps raise vital resources that fuel our programs year-round, ensuring that learning and growth continue long after the event ends.
On GivingTuesday 2024 alone, U.S. donors contributed an estimated $3.6 billion through community-driven events, proving that when people gather for a shared purpose, extraordinary impact follows.
